Many riders dream of leaving their motorcycle in Europe or the United Kingdom and returning the following season to continue their adventure. While this is possible in some circumstances, it is important to understand that temporary vehicle import regulations can be complex and vary depending on your nationality, the country of entry, your travel history, and your individual circumstances.

One of the most common misunderstandings is that the travel rules for the rider and the temporary import rules for the motorcycle are the same. They are not.

For the rider:
Many travelers may be subject to immigration limitations, such as the Schengen 90 days within a 180-day period rule, depending on nationality and visa status.

​

For the motorcycle:
A foreign-registered motorcycle may be subject to separate temporary import regulations. In many situations, the permitted time may be approximately six months within a twelve-month period; however, regulations, interpretation, and enforcement can vary.

The most important point:
Leaving Europe does not necessarily reset the temporary import status of your motorcycle.

At Motorcycle Express Services, our role is to coordinate the international transportation of your motorcycle. We are not customs brokers or immigration advisors, and we cannot determine your individual eligibility to leave a motorcycle overseas beyond applicable temporary import regulations.

We strongly recommend that riders who plan to:

• Leave their motorcycle in Europe or the UK for an extended period

• Return the following riding season

• Store their motorcycle for many months

• Travel through multiple countries

In recent years, we have seen situations where riders encountered significant delays and customs complications when attempting to export their motorcycles after an extended stay.

 

Although Motorcycle Express Services may be able to arrange the physical shipment of a motorcycle, customs authorities ultimately determine whether a motorcycle can legally be exported and released.

 

Proper planning, maintaining documentation, and seeking advice from the appropriate customs professionals before exceeding temporary import periods can help prevent costly delays, penalties, or the potential seizure of a motorcycle.
